Community Shares of Wisconsin Tackles Cultural Competence
From the May 2006 issue of Asian Wisconzine:
It’s not surprising that Community Shares of Wisconsin (CSW), a nonprofit committed to social change, would be one of the first agencies in Wisconsin to assess its organization’s and membership’s cultural competence. With changing demographics and expanding range of services and issues in the state, CSW, upon consultation with Harold Gates of the Midwest Center for Cultural Competence, conducted a workshop on April 5 among representatives of its member agencies. After Gates’ introduction, the participants, grouped at seven tables, did a brainstorming session that addressed the issue of how to increase cultural competence within the membership, including how CSW values diversity/cultural differences, and how it supports advancement of equity and fighting social oppression.
