CMD LogoIn his address to a joint session of Congress on health care reform, the President quoted the Center for Media and Democracy‘s Senior Fellow on Health Care, Wendell Potter. “As one former insurance executive testified before Congress, insurance companies are not only encouraged to find reasons to drop the seriously ill; they are rewarded for it,” said the President.

Potter, a former Cigna Insurance executive, was described by TIME magazine as a potential “ideal whistle-blower” for his decision to go public, and for his detailed descriptions of the for-profit health-insurance industry’s duplicitous behavior in the 2009 health-reform debate.

His revelations have been covered by numerous media outlets, among them CNN, PBS, NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, Fox News, National Public Radio, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and by another CSW member group, The Progressive.

New group in 2010: One of 14 new Community Shares member groups in 2010, the Center for Media and Democracy is a national watchdog group exposing spin, documenting financial influence, and assisting health, economic, and environmental activists.
