The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) is suing the Public Service Commission over its decision to require We Energies’ electric customers to subsidize Big Business steam customers in downtown Milwaukee. The decision calls for We Energies electric customers across the state to pay 92 percent of the capital costs, or $74 million, to convert the Valley plant, while only 8 percent of the project’s costs, or $6.4 million, would be paid by downtown Milwaukee steam (large business) customers-which are the primary users of the plant. More than $250 million of electric ratepayer money is on the line, and CUB is going to court to protect it.
