Volunteers from Community GroundWorks recently planted a vegetable garden on the South Hamilton Street corner of Madison’s Capitol Square. The Madison Farmworks project replaced a flower bed with a variety of vegetables and edible flowers. The group was inspired by the First Lady’s decision to plant a vegetable garden on the White House lawn. Community GroundWorks is hoping the project will encourage the public to try vegetable gardening at home.
It’s also good news for all of us who walk by the capitol. Though the purpose of the garden is to demonstrate what kinds of vegetables can be grown and what they taste like, people are free to pick the vegetables just as long as they don’t damage the plants. The majority of the food will be donated to the Goodman Food Pantry.
