A 19-year-old woman with mental illness contacted Disability Rights Wisconsin (DRW) to ask for help. She was having suicidal and homicidal thoughts, and she was cutting herself. She was living in a state institution, but the only treatment provided there was restricting her to a stripped-down room.
DRW visited the woman and then began successfully working with the county to move her to a group home. She would not only be closer to her home, she would have multiple supportive contacts and could have access to education and therapy.
The woman is now living in a supported apartment and has continued to improve. She is working on her GED, and she attends individual and group therapy.
