In recent years, staffers at Freedom Inc. have witnessed an evolution.
The Southeast Asian elders–survivors of intimate-partner, family, and sexual violence–became organizers.
Hmong elders took on fighting for access to land for community gardens, which they saw as central to building safe spaces for healing, cultural continuity, and self-determination. The elders organized to create True Yee Garden at Bayview Community Center, as well as other community gardens.
Freedom Inc. is a leader among such programs in the state.
