John and Kathy contacted Wisconsin Wetlands Association (WWA) with questions about a large wetland on their land near Stevens Point. They wanted to restore and protect their wetland, but weren’t sure how. John’s initial thought was to deepen the wetland with a bulldozer to create a duck habitat.
With help from WWA, John and Kathy learned that their wetland contained desirable native vegetation and wildlife habitat and that, though well-intentioned, deepening the wetland may cause more harm than good. They also learned that the water feeding their wetland was shared with adjacent lands.
Today John and Kathy are working with their neighbors to protect a wetland complex, since it does not stop at property lines. They are also spreading the word about the benefits of healthy wetlands in their community.
