Midwest Environmental AdvocatesWater gathered upstream is clear; the jar with water gathered downstream shows the brown tint of manure (MEA) continues its efforts to bring a factory farm’s water pollution permit to court. MEA has been working with citizens since 2012 to challenge the factory farm expansion—when there are already private drinking wells contaminated with E. coli and nitrates from the heavy spreading of manure waste on area fields. (Photos show water gathered upstream, left, and downstream, right, after rain causes manure to run off of fields and into creeks, and eventually into groundwater.)
