Recently a 70-year-old tenant complained to her landlord that the heat was not working. The landlord came to the apartment but, instead of offering a fix, told her she had 48 hours to vacate. Distraught, she called her daughter to get help moving, and luckily her daughter referred her to Tenant Resource Center. The TRC staff noted that this was illegal, and they explained the legal eviction process. They also explained her landlord’s duty to heat the apartment and her protections against possible retaliation when requesting future repairs. The woman talked through a plan to assert her rights, and she kept her housing.
